Motivated by a yearning for greater political and economic autonomy, as well as a response to enduring repression on the island, Puerto Rico's pro-independence movement orchestrated an armed uprising famously called the Grito de Lares (1868) - also recognized as the Lares Revolution. Marking the island's initial significant stand against Spanish dominion, the rebellion was masterminded by visionaries Ramon Emeterio Betances and Segundo Ruiz Belvis. An important aspect of this rebellion was the emancipation of all slaves who had rallied for the cause, subsequently securing their status as free citizens. Through this graphic, we honor and acknowledge the profound significance of this movement.
